Type of Fishing Jan Lake is noted for its exceptional Pickerel and Northern Pike. The average weight of the PICKEREL (WALLEYE) is from two to four pounds. Walleye just don't grow as big in the cold waters of the north as they do in southern Saskatchewan, and the warm lakes and reservoirs of the U.S. Northern Pike - Average weight is from 4 to twelve pounds. A lot of trophy Northern Pike are caught every year from twenty to twenty-five pounds.
Fishing Tackle We recommend a flexible trolling rod, six or seven feet long or your favorite casting rod and plenty of 15 - 20 pound test line, with heavy duty snaps and swivels for Northern Pike ( you need equipment that can take it). For protection of our lakes and rivers, only artificial bait is allowed in Saskatchewan - daredevils, spoons, plugs and jiggs of all colors. Most of you have this equipment in your tackle box. Use a lighter rod with 6 - 10 test line to test your skill catching Walleye or Pickerel. You can use frozen minnows, leaches and night crawlers for bait. Your Shore Lunch Shore Lunches are a meal time adventure you will remember all your life. Most people agree there is no cafe, home chef or person in this world that will prepare you a fish dinner that will taste as good at noon or evening as a dinner prepared on a beautiful island where you can relax, swim, take a little snooze or cast off the rocks. You can prepare your own shore lunches or we can prepare one for you for a small fee. Your dinner will consist of the fish you select, potatoes, vegetables, bread, butter, pork and beans and fruit, coffee or tea. Everything is complete in this box and no dishes to wash. All parties should try this at least one day of their trip. We call it "Beach Banquet".
